Parvej Khan, an 18-year-old athlete from Chahalka village in Mewat, Haryana, has made India proud by becoming the first Indian to win the 1500m title at the prestigious SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championship 2024 in Louisiana, USA. This highly competitive collegiate championship is known for its toughness, making Parvej’s achievement even more remarkable.
A Talent Nurtured by the Indian Navy
Parvej’s journey to success began when he was recruited into the Indian Navy after winning a gold medal in the 1500m at the Open National Championships in Warrangal in 2021. The Indian Military is known for scouting talented athletes and sportspersons, providing them with opportunities to excel in their respective fields.
Before joining the Navy, Parvej had already shown his prowess by winning gold in the Under-16 category 800m national games in Mangalagiri in 2019 and a bronze at the U-18 Khelo India Games in 2020.
A Dream Supported by the Indian Navy
For many young Meo Muslims in the Mewat region, securing a job in the Military is a cherished dream. For Parvej, it not only provided financial stability to pay off family debts but also opened doors to further his athletic pursuits.
The Indian Navy played a crucial role in nurturing Parvej’s talent by providing him with training in running. When the opportunity to study at the University of Florida on a scholarship arose, the Navy supported Parvej’s decision and granted him permission to study abroad.
In an interview with Sports Star, Parvej expressed his gratitude to the Indian Navy, stating, “With the scholarship offer letter in hand, Khan next approached his superiors in the Indian Navy for permission to study abroad.”
Parvej’s remarkable achievement of clocking 3 minutes and 42.73 seconds to win the 1500m race at the LSU Bernie Moore Stadium in Baton Rouge, USA, is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and the unwavering support of the Indian Navy. His personal best of 3:38.76, achieved in California last month, further highlights his potential to achieve greater heights in the future.
