India had a remarkable week at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. Filmmaker Payal Kapadia made history by becoming the first Indian woman director to have her film, “All We Imagine as Light,” selected for the main competition category. Kapadia’s directorial debut, “All We Imagine as Light,” revolves around the lives of two women from Kerala, Prabha and Anu, who work as nurses in Mumbai. The film beautifully captures their shared experiences, emotions, and struggles in a one-room kitchen. The lead roles are played by talented actors like Kani Kasturi, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, and Hridhur Haroon. Ranbir Das’s cinematography is remarkable, capturing the essence of Mumbai’s crowded streets, local trains, and the serene moments of the nurses’ lives.
A Poignant Portrayal of Loneliness
Despite living together in Mumbai, Kapadia’s film poignantly depicts the loneliness that never leaves the women. The film’s grand premiere at the Grand Theater Lumiere was met with a record 8-minute standing ovation, and Kapadia and her team were given a grand red-carpet welcome. Distributors and buyers from around the world have shown interest in this remarkable film, further solidifying its impact on the global stage.
