Memories of Childhood Holidays with Professor Imtiaz Ahmad

Professor Imtiaz Ahmad, a distinguished historian and former Director of the Khuda Bakhsh Library, began his academic career as a Lecturer in History at T.N.B. College, Bhagalpur. He later taught at Patna University from 1979 to 2004 and served as Guest Faculty at Assam Administrative Staff College. His notable contributions to historical conferences and cultural institutions, including his roles with the Indian Council of Historical Research and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, highlight his influence in preserving cultural heritage. As an author and editor, his scholarly works have left a significant mark on academic discourse.

Childhood Holiday Memories

Professor Ahmad reminisces about his childhood in Patna, where he lived with an extended family in a large haveli. Holidays were filled with fun, games, and travel. In Patna, they played cricket and football in a large field, and winter evenings were spent playing badminton. Indoor games like carom, chess, and cards were my favourite pastimes. Their vacations took them to hill stations like Darjeeling Mussoorie and Kolkata during the Puja holidays, where they enjoyed the festive spirit of the city.

A Budding Journalist

During his school days, Professor Ahmad developed a keen interest in writing. Every Sunday, he typed a news bulletin that covered household events and political news, which he shared with family members. Encouraged by his father and uncles, this hobby eventually led to publishing a column in the Hindustan Times. He later contributed to a popular “Career Corner” page for civil service aspirants, drawing on his experience coaching students.

Cherished Traditions and Reflections

The large haveli with its open spaces and courtyard was a central part of Professor Ahmad’s childhood. Summer evenings were spent cooling the courtyard with water and lying on the cot, gazing at the stars. He fondly remembers the clear night skies, contrasting with today’s urban living where greenery and open skies are scarce. This connection with nature and simpler times remains a cherished memory for Professor Ahmad.
