PM Modi Celebrates 10th International Yoga Day in Kashmir

Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the 10th International Yoga Day by performing yoga at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre in Srinagar. He congratulated people worldwide practising yoga and highlighted its growing global acceptance. Modi recalled how India’s proposal for an International Yoga Day was supported by 177 nations at the United Nations. He noted the emergence of a new “Yoga economy,” with increasing yoga tourism in places like Rishikesh, Kashi, and Kerala, creating job opportunities in hospitality, tourism, and related sectors.

Yoga’s Expanding Influence in Education and Research

The Prime Minister mentioned the increasing global interest in yoga research, with renowned universities worldwide conducting studies and publishing papers on the subject. He also highlighted the formation of the Yoga Certification Board by India’s AYUSH department, which has certified over 100 major institutions in India and 10 abroad. Modi cited examples of yoga’s integration into education systems, such as its inclusion as a subject at the State Medical University of Turkmenistan.

Yoga’s Impact on Kashmir and Recognition of Practitioners

Modi emphasized how the growing interest in yoga across Jammu and Kashmir is boosting tourism in the region. He also recognized international yoga practitioners, mentioning Charlotte Chopin, a 101-year-old French yoga instructor who received the Padma Shri award this year. The Prime Minister stressed that the number of people practising yoga worldwide is steadily increasing, reflecting its universal appeal.

The event in Srinagar aligned with this year’s theme, “Yoga for Self and Society,” emphasizing yoga’s role in promoting individual well-being and social harmony. Modi’s presence in Kashmir for this celebration highlighted the government’s efforts to integrate the region and promote its cultural significance in India’s yoga tradition.
