Many people don’t realise that watching a play is different from watching a movie. In a cinema, you can whisper without bothering the actors, but in a theatre, talking can ruin the performance.
Rude Interruption
During a performance of “Dear Liar” in New Delhi, Naseeruddin Shah and his talented wife Ratna Pathak Shah were acting in an intense scene. Suddenly, a man in the audience started talking loudly on his phone. Shah stopped the play and stood waiting. When the man didn’t stop, Shah politely said, “Please talk; we can do the play later. We’ll wait.”
The audience got angry and told the man to leave. He finally went outside to finish his call, and the actors continued the play with the same passion. Shah later said, “I’ve often stopped briefly during performances to tease someone whose phone is ringing, but only if the play allows it. Ringing phones are something theatre people have to live with.”
It’s amazing how these experienced actors can stay calm and finish their intense plays despite such interruptions. This shows the struggle and skill of veteran actors – they must constantly switch between high and low moments on stage! It’s important for audiences to remember that theatre is a live performance. Respecting the actors and other viewers by staying quiet and turning off phones can make the experience better for everyone.
