Biography of Prophet Muhammad in Assamese by Gopinath Bordoloi

Assam has a rich tradition of biographical literature, especially Islamic biographies. Many of these focus on Prophet Muhammad and his four Caliphs. Gopinath Bordoloi, Assam’s first Chief Minister and a Bharat Ratna awardee, wrote the first biography of Prophet Muhammad in Assamese. This work contributed significantly to the Assamese language.

Writing During Difficult Times

In 1942, during the Quit India Movement, Bordoloi was imprisoned. While in jail, he wrote several biographies for children, including one about Hazrat Muhammad. He began this biography by addressing his young readers as “Dear Son.” He aimed to share the life of the Prophet Muhammad, describing him as a preacher of Islam. Bordoloi had previously written about other religious figures like Sri Ramachandra, Buddha, and Jesus Christ.

Lessons from the Prophet’s Life

Bordoloi emphasised that the biography of Prophet Muhammad is more historical than those of other saints, which often include supernatural elements. He covered the Prophet’s life from birth to death, highlighting his patience during hardships. Bordoloi noted that the Prophet faced humiliation while preaching but remained calm and composed. He admired how the Prophet treated his enemies with kindness, stating that there was no place for coercion in his rule. Instead, the Prophet governed through negotiations and agreements, ensuring security for all.

Bordoloi also quoted Mahatma Gandhi, who believed that the simple life and virtues of the Prophet, such as selflessness and trust in God, were the true reasons for the spread of Islam, not violence. Towards the end of the biography, Bordoloi reflected on the oppression he witnessed in the name of Islam. He criticised those who resorted to violence against other faiths, stating that selfishness was the root of such conflicts. He believed that true followers of religion should not engage in hatred or discrimination against others. In summary, Gopinath Bordoloi’s biography of Prophet Muhammad serves as a valuable resource, teaching important lessons about patience, kindness, and the true essence of faith.
