If you thought the metro was just a place to lose your wallet and your patience, think again! Metro In Dino (2025) is here to prove that the absolute chaos is not in the traffic, but in the hearts of its passengers. This movie is a spiritual successor to the cult film ‘Life in a…’ directed by the ever-inventive Anurag Basu. Metro (2007), but with more smartphones, more swiping, and, believe it or not, even more confusion about love.
The question then is, why aren’t more movies like this being produced by Bollywood? Perhaps because it is challenging to keep all these patched-up stories without losing a couple, or because it is simpler to make another patriotic action film rather than portray real people with genuine issues. But Basu is bold enough to be un-Bollywood, and the effect is a movie that is dirty, hilarious and full of twists and turns, just like a Mumbai commuter during peak times.
The Cast: Who’s Who in the Metro In Dino Mayhem
So, we will see the passengers of this emotional roller-coaster:
- Aditya Roy Kapur as Parth: The Casanova who is commitment-phobic and cannot determine whether he loves his girlfriend or himself the most.
- Sara Ali Khan as Chumki (Thumri): The “good girl” who’s so obedient, she’d probably apologise to a mosquito for slapping it. Her transformation into a person of self-discovery, from a corporate pushover, is both touching and funny.
- Ali Fazal plays Akash, an underprivileged musician who often resorts to singing rather than solving problems.
- Fatima Sana Shaikh as Shruti: Wife of Akash and is having an unwanted pregnancy, has career ambitions and is being married to a man who believes that he is the next Arijit Singh.
- Pankaj Tripathi as Monty: The restless husband who believes that his marriage can be repaired by an application to find a date. Spoiler: No, it does not; however, it provides some of the funniest scenes in the film.
- Konkona Sen Sharma as Kajol: The wife of Monty, who is so tired of her husband that her Instagram is more interesting than her matrimony.
- Neena Gupta plays Shivani, the mother of Kajol, who is trapped in a soulless marriage, yet dreams of getting another chance to fall in love.
- Anupam Kher as Parimal: Parimal is Shivani’s college sweetheart and is now a retired man, having gained much wisdom rather than hair.
- Saswata Chatterjee as Sanjeev: The husband of Shivani, who is there just so that we get reminded that not all marriages are in heaven.
- Supporting Cast Members Kush Jotwani, Darshana Banik, Rohan Gurbaxani, and others are like icing on a cake that is already spicy.
All the actors have their peculiarities, so this collective is a very accurate representation of a metro trip. Sometimes it is crowded, sometimes lonely, yet it is always interesting.
Metro In Dino Plot: Romance, Comedy and Life Advice
Metro In Dino is not just one story—it’s a buffet of love stories, each with its flavour:
Parth and Chumki: He gets allergic to commitment, and she gets allergic to confrontation. By chance, they meet in Bengaluru, and a series of amusing mistakes, misunderstandings, and ultimately, self-discovery follows.
Akash and Shruti: The love between young people and real Life. Unexpected pregnancy, career problems, and the famous question, which anyone facing this can ask: Is it to chase my dreams or my husband? They are relatable and funny at the same time, and you can especially relate to the moment when Akash attempts to become a singer and sings the blues.
Monty and Kajol: The ageing duo that has made their marriage a matter of routine. The mishap of Monty meeting the same guy on a dating app is not only funny but also poignant, and likewise, Kajol, who is on social media. The incident is meant to be a subtle jab at how our world is photo-ready.
Shivani and Parimal: Past, present. Their meeting at a college batch reunion is sweet, pretentious, and a confirmation that love does not have an expiry date.
The stories weave in and around Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, and Pune, demonstrating that whether you are in the city or the countryside, love is never simple, nor is the purchase of chai in a metro city.
What Is Life on a… like or unlike? Metro In Dino?
Now, let us try a spot the difference:
Both films juggle multiple stories, but Metro In Dino is more playful, more self-referential, and more aware of the times in which we live. In case of Life in a… Metro was about finding love in a crowd, Metro in Dino is about finding WiFi in a crowd—and maybe, just maybe, a little love too.
Why does Bollywood hardly produce such interesting cinema?
The fact is that we all know Bollywood is all about its formulae. Action? Check. Item song? Double check. Patriotic speech? Triple check. But movies like Metro in Dino are rare because:
- Too Much of a Good Thing: It is challenging to manage too many characters without overwhelming the audience. Basu handles it light-heartedly yet emotionally, and not everyone is capable of doing it.
- Realism Against Melodrama: Almost all Bollywood films would prefer heroes who can beat ten goons simultaneously. In this case, the punching happens to be only a matter of ego for Monty, as his wife turns to Instagram instead of him.
- Contained Adult Themes: Relationships, infidelity, and loneliness are the themes that you won’t resolve through a song and dance sequence. Basu is very straight with them, yet with the wink of an eye, which makes the movie serious and comic at the same time.
- No Sermons: The movie does not tell you how to react, but it allows you to laugh and cringe, and in the process, you may shed a tear or two. It is chaotic, uncertain like Life, and at times simply bizarre.
Why not more films like this? Simply because it is simpler to create a superhero rather than a real human being. And when they do it, it feels like a breath of fresh air–like when you find no one on the metro in the rush hour.
The Music: Pritam Band In The Action Again
Without some music, what is a ride on the metro? Pritam is back with his band, and he provides us with songs which are haunting and hummable. The music is not just accompaniment; it is the pulse of the whole movie, a bridge between the plots and emotions.
Soulful Tracks: The tracks of the songs in the movie cut across the moods of the characters, that is, bittersweet.
Band Cameos: As in the original, the band appears at the most eventful points, sometimes speaking, and sometimes providing background information.
Nostalgia Factor: In case you adored the music in Life in a…. Metro, you are in the right place here–only a bit more guitar solos and a lot more feels.
Performances: Who washed the logo?
- Pankaj Tripathi: His comic timing is so good, you’ll wish he were your neighbour (unless you’re his wife in the film).
- Konkona Sen Sharma: She is naturally brilliant and gives some meat to a role which otherwise would have been of a dull, bored wife.
- Sara Ali Khan: You might not expect it, but especially when done awkwardly, she can be hilarious. She has cringeworthy moments of her shayari.
- Aditya Roy Kapur: He is the guy you want to confuse the poor boy, a little too charming and a little too dumb.
- Neena Gupta and Anupam Kher: Gupta plays a mature woman in love with Kher, and this is the most steady romance, which shows that there is no age limit in love stories.
- Ali Fazal & Fatima Sana Shaikh: Add some zest and reality to a pair that looks like it is on the brink of separation- and perhaps opening up.
The supporting cast is also impressive, so even the subplots are significant. It can be compared to a relay race in which the baton is being passed around and nobody drops it.
The Humour: The Mess of Laughing at Life
What makes Metro In Dino stand out is its humour. It is not a slapstick, the sneaking-up kind:
Dating App Horrors: The Ordeals of Monty on 870 Billion, a Dating App, Are a Crash Course on What Not to Do When Trying to Hit on Someone.
Awkward Family Dinners: It seems like a scene out of your family dinner when you attempt to recount to your relatives what you do.
Corporate Troubles: Chumki is both hilarious and sad in her office problems.
Social Media Silliness: Kajol is addicted to Instagram, but it’s a repeated joke that can be both acute and ridiculous.
The film was about the comedy of the ordinary, as it reminds us that at times, you have to laugh when everything in Life fails to make sense.
The Darker Side: The Dying Laughter
However, it is not only joking and memes. The movie is earnest:
Infidelity and Trust: Yes, it is not a shocking topic, as it is sometimes presented, but it is a current issue in relationships nowadays.
Alone in the Crowd: The characters feel lonely in the complex environment of a crowd, a sentiment often shared by many city dwellers.
Second Chances: Whether it’s love, a career, or even family, the film takes the view that one should have a second chance.
No Easy Answers: It does not offer a magic solution, unlike most other Bollywood films. Occasionally, the closure is as simple as learning to live with the mess.
This juxtaposition of comedy and tragedy makes the movie all the more captivating, and it is also uncommon in the contemporary world of Bollywood.
