Milestones in Indian Sports 2024

Indian sports in 2024 had a number of very wonderful milestones. India’s Rohan Bopanna paired with Australia’s Matthew Ebden clinched the men’s doubles crown in the Australian Open. It was Bopanna’s first Grand Slam title in men’s doubles and, along with his partner, he became the oldest man to win a Grand Slam title in the Open Era at 43 years nine months. He also climbed to No. 1 in the ATP doubles rankings. February saw the Indian women’s badminton team clinch the first gold at the Badminton Asia Team Championships in Malaysia with PV Sindhu and Anmol Kharb. Kharb also came out as important by booting out stronger teams.

Cricket Triumphs and Retirements

The Indian cricket team won the title for ICC Men’s T20I World Cup after 17 years in the tournament held jointly with USA and West Indies. Also, under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, the team was unbeaten throughout the tournament and claimed the champion title through defeating South Africa. The Player of the Tournament was Jasprit Bumrah. It also turned out to be the last International T20 match for Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja. In football, Sunil Chhetri retired at the age of 38 nearly after playing 20 years for the country being its highest scorer with 94 goals.

Success at the Paris Olympics

In the Paris 2024 Olympics, Indian Sports persons won six medals including one Silver and five bronze medals. Neeraj Chopra gave his best in men’s javelin throw fetching a silver medal That makes Neeraj Chopra part of a special club of Olympians with multiple medals. Shooter Manu Bhaker secured two bronze medals including first Olympic medal in shooting for women. The wrestler Aman Sehrawat won men’s freestyle 57 kg bronze at the Olympics and became one of India’s youngest Olympians at 21. The Indian men’s hockey team also bagged bronze with PR Sreejesh starring in the tournament.
