Islamic Rights and Responsibilities Among Siblings

Islamic rights and responsibilities are bestowed upon siblings, fostering love, unity, and mutual support within the Muslim community. A paramount act is the exchange of greetings—uttering “Assalamu’ alaikum,” meaning “May you be in salvation,” is a recommended Sunnah that kindles affection and proximity among Muslims, especially siblings.

Endorsed by the Prophet, this practice embodies the concept of reciprocation: “When someone greets you, respond with a better greeting or return it.” (An-Nisa 4:86)

Guidance is an essential privilege siblings possess. We must provide advice and counsel when sought, even if the issue does not directly concern them. This noble act upholds religious values and safeguards fellow Muslims from perilous paths, demonstrating our shared responsibility to eliminate harm from our community.

Harmony restoration post-conflict is an essential entitlement among siblings. Allah likens believers to brothers created to share a lifelong bond. Thus, nurturing peace among them is imperative. “Only the believers (are) brothers, so make peace between your brothers and fear Allah so that you may receive mercy.” (Al-Hujurat 49:10)

Unity is a recurring theme in Islam, emphasized through symbolic imagery in the Quran. Muslims are urged to “together hold firmly to the rope of Allah and not be divided.” (Al-Imran 3:103) This unity is an expression of familial ties and a reflection of Allah’s grace that transformed former adversaries into steadfast companions.

Mutual assistance is a cornerstone of sibling relationships. Collective efforts can ease the challenges shared, emphasizing siblings as inherent allies of significant importance.

Imperfect actions and transgressions are inevitable among siblings. Islam promotes patience and forgiveness, discouraging harbouring grudges. Maintaining a forgiving heart ensures enduring relationships, preserving the sanctity of the sibling bond.

Islamic teachings interweave the rights and duties of siblings with compassion, understanding, and communal harmony in their tapestry. Upholding these principles cultivates an environment where siblings thrive as pillars of support, companionship, and spiritual growth.
