The triumphant landing of India’s Chandrayaan-3 on the Moon’s South Pole owes its success to the contributions of two extraordinary scientists from Assam: Nazneen Yasmin and Dr Baharul Islam Barbhuyan. Their dedication and resilience have propelled them to the forefront of the historic mission.
Nazneen Yasmin, hailing from central Assam’s Nagaon district, embarked on her ISRO journey two years ago after emerging victorious in a gruelling selection test. Despite her middle-class background, she pursued her passion relentlessly. Her expertise in radar tracking within ISRO’s launch department has been pivotal over the past year. Nazneen’s path was not devoid of challenges, as she returned to work after maternity leave, often bringing her child along.
Dr. Baharul Islam Barbhuiyan, hailing from south Assam’s Hailakandi, exemplifies the power of perseverance. His journey to success began in his humble village, Syedband II Khand, near Hailakandi town. At 45, he is now a celebrated scientist at ISRO, an instrumental figure in Chandrayaan-3’s historic achievement. Baharul Islam’s ISRO journey, with a B.Sc from SS College, a Mathematics Masters from Aligarh Muslim University, and a Gujarat University PhD, thrived on parental backing and a science-nurturing home ambience.
