Amrita Sher-Gil’s ‘The Story Teller’ Sets World Record with Rs 61.8 Crore Sale

In a historic moment for the world of art, Amrita Sher-Gil‘s masterpiece, ‘The Story Teller,’ created in 1937, achieved a staggering sale price of Rs 61.8 crore on September 16th, setting a new world record for the highest price ever paid for a work by an Indian artist.

‘The Story Teller’ is a testament to Sher-Gil’s artistic prowess during a pivotal period in her career when her European and Indian influences converged to form a distinctive creative language.

Notably, the painting’s central theme revolves around the representation of women as dominant subjects, reflecting Sher-Gil’s deep exploration of the feminine experience through her art.

Amrita Sher-Gil, often hailed as one of the foremost avant-garde women artists of the early 20th century, emerged as a pioneering figure in modern Indian art.

Born in Budapest in 1913, she was the offspring of an Indian aristocratic father and a Hungarian-Jewish mother, a unique blend of cultural backgrounds that would later infuse her work with a rich tapestry of influences.

Sher-Gil’s artistic journey took a transformative turn when she relocated to Shimla at the tender age of eight, marking the beginning of her lifelong affair with art.

Her artistic journey commenced in earnest when she embarked on formal art lessons at the age of eight, and her early exposure to the art world ignited a passion that would drive her to artistic greatness. The post-impressionist movement deeply influenced Sher-Gil during her formative years, leaving an indelible mark on her evolving style.

Tragically, Amrita Sher-Gil’s brilliant artistic career was cut short prematurely when she passed away at the young age of 28 in 1941. Yet, her legacy endures, and ‘The Story Teller’ now stands as a testament to her enduring impact on the world of art, captivating the hearts and imaginations of art enthusiasts and collectors alike and etching her name into the annals of art history.
