Embracing Ramadan: A Global Spiritual Journey

As the Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia officially announced the sighting of the Crescent moon, marking the opening of the holy month of Ramadan, Indian Muslims prepare to go on their fasting journey. Unlike Saudi Arabia, Indian Muslims are yet to begin their fasting, it will commence a day later, on Tuesday, March 12th.

The Significance of Ramadan

With over 2 billion Muslims worldwide, Ramadan is more than simply refraining from food and drink,. It is a time for serious self-reflection, commitment, charity, and sacrifice, unifying the Muslim community worldwide in their desire to spiritual development.

At the core of Ramadan lies the spiritual practice of fasting, acting as a tool for Muslims to acquire self-discipline, empathy, and spiritual awareness. It is considered to be the month in which the Prophet Muhammad received the first verses of the Holy Quran about 1,400 years ago.

The Pillars of Islam

Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam, alongside the proclamation of faith, daily prayers, charity, and the Hajj trip to Mecca. All healthy Muslims who have attained puberty are expected to practice fasting, known as Roza. However, exceptions are given for the elderly, ill, tourists, and pregnant or nursing women.

Despite fasting, Muslims are required to continue with their everyday activities, including work and reading the Quran. Special prayers and mosque visits are recommended on each day of Ramadan to improve spiritual connection and commitment.

As Ramadan starts, Muslims throughout the globe join in a common commitment to spiritual development and self-discipline. Through fasting and dedication, they attempt to enhance their link with their religion and their community, embracing the meaning of Ramadan beyond simple abstinence from food and drink.
