Muharram: A Time of Remembrance and Unity

Muharram commemorates Imam Hussein's martyrdom, symbolizing courage against injustice. It's not just Muslim mourning, but a universal call to stand against oppression and corruption.

Muharram marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, grandson of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), in the battle of Karbala over 1300 years ago. This event, occurring on the 10th day of Muharram (Ashura), is significant not only for Muslims but for all of humanity. It symbolises the courage to stand up against injustice, oppression, and tyranny.

The battle of Karbala saw Imam Hussein and his 72 supporters facing a much larger army led by Yazid. Despite being outnumbered, Hussein refused to bow to Yazid’s unjust rule, ultimately sacrificing his life for his beliefs.

The Ongoing Struggle for Justice

The message of Karbala remains relevant today. As Imam Hussein’s grandson Ja’far as-Sadiq said, “Every day is Ashura, and every land is the land of Karbala.” This means that the fight against injustice is ongoing and happens everywhere.

In our current times, we see many forms of injustice, inequality, and oppression around the world. These issues remind us that the spirit of Karbala – standing up for what’s right – is still needed.

Unity in the Face of Adversity

An often-overlooked aspect of the Karbala story is the support Imam Hussein received from people outside his faith. One such group was the “Husseini Brahmins,” Hindu warriors who travelled from India to support Hussein’s cause.

The story of the Husseini Brahmins serves as a powerful reminder of Hindu-Muslim unity in the face of oppression. It demonstrates that the fight for justice transcends religious boundaries and can bring people together in unexpected ways.

As we commemorate Muharram, we should remember not only the sacrifice of Imam Hussein but also the spirit of unity and courage shown by all those who stood with him, regardless of their background. Their example encourages us to stand up for what’s right and work together to create a more just world.
