Salim Zaidi: From Cricket to Stardom in Acting

Tillu, a jobless character played by Salim Zaidi in "Bhabhi Ji Ghar Par Hain," dreamed of becoming a cricket star like Sachin Tendulkar.

Salim Zaidi, hailing from Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, had dreams that revolved around cricket rather than acting. He passionately played cricket at the zonal level and never imagined a career in the entertainment industry. However, everything changed when his elder brother invited him to Delhi. There, he enrolled in a Mass Communication course, which opened new doors for him. After completing his studies, Salim worked as a Radio Jockey at All India Radio, where he began to explore his interest in acting.

Theater and Breakthrough

Salim’s journey into acting started when he joined a local theatre group. His first performance was in the play “Dara Shikoh,” where he portrayed the character of Jahangir. This experience was well-received by both audiences and fellow actors, boosting his confidence in pursuing acting further. After five years of honing his skills in theatre, Salim moved to Mumbai in 2013, eager to make a mark in the entertainment industry.

Upon arriving in Mumbai, he began landing roles almost immediately, although they were not significant at first. His persistence paid off when he got a role in the acclaimed biopic “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag,” where he played a Pakistani reporter. This project brought him into the spotlight. However, it was his impressive performance in “Trip to Bhangarh” that truly showcased his talent. In this film, he delivered a remarkable two-and-a-half-minute shot without a retake, earning him recognition in the industry.

Recognition and Future Projects

Salim Zaidi’s popularity soared when he joined the cast of the hit TV series “Bhabhi Ji Ghar Par Hain” as Tillu. He has been part of the show since its beginning, and it has become a significant part of his identity. Reflecting on his role, he stated, “Perhaps this character was made for me. Today people recognize me as ‘Tillu.'”

Looking ahead, Salim is set to appear in the upcoming film “UP Files,” where he will play a dishonest leader named Shukla. He believes that a theatre actor truly immerses themselves in every character, yet he feels most comfortable in comedic roles. As he continues his journey, Salim Zaidi remains a versatile talent in the Indian entertainment landscape.
