Jaishankar Unveils Mahatma Gandhi Bust in Tokyo

On Sunday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar unveiled a bust of Mahatma Gandhi at Freedom Plaza in Edogawa, Tokyo, during the Quad Foreign Ministers meeting. The ceremony was attended by Edogawa Mayor Takeshi Saito, Indian Ambassador to Japan Sibi George, and other dignitaries. A group of schoolchildren also participated by singing Gandhi’s favourite prayer, “Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram.”

Strengthening India-Japan Ties

During the unveiling, Jaishankar emphasized that this statue signifies Japan’s desire to strengthen its relationship with India. He remarked, “We have gathered here today because Edogawa ward and Mayor Takeshi Saito have decided to build a relationship with India by having this wonderful statue of Mahatma Gandhi.” He expressed hope that the location, often referred to as “Little India,” would grow in significance.

Jaishankar highlighted Gandhi’s enduring global impact, stating that his messages remain relevant today. He noted, “The achievements of Gandhi have far outlived his times,” and stressed the importance of Gandhi’s teachings in today’s world filled with conflict and polarization.

Gandhi’s Legacy and Sustainable Growth

Jaishankar reflected on the impact of Gandhi on India’s independence, stating that without him, the struggle for freedom could have taken much longer. He pointed out that India’s independence initiated a wave of decolonization across Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

He also praised Gandhi as a champion of sustainable growth, saying, “Gandhi was the greatest advocate of how to live in harmony with nature.” Jaishankar urged everyone to adopt Gandhi’s principles of sustainability in their personal lives.

In closing, Jaishankar expressed his affection for Japan, saying, “This is not like a second home; it is a second home.” He thanked the Japanese community for their warmth and support, looking forward to future visits.
