Artist Javed as Lord Ram: Journey of Understanding and Unity

Javed, a dedicated theatre artist with decades of experience, shared his thoughts on portraying Lord Ram in a Delhi Ramleela show. He emphasised that simply watching the Ramayana is not enough; one must read it to truly understand Lord Ram’s character. Javed believes that understanding Ram can lead to freedom from personal troubles. He has trained at the Shri Ram Center of Art and the National School of Drama in New Delhi, performing in over 100 shows and making cameo appearances in five Bollywood films.

Finding Connection with Ram

When asked about his inspiration, Javed explained that Ram’s qualities deeply moved him. He described Ram as the ideal man, known as Maryada Purushottam, who embodies 16 human qualities and 12 artistic skills. Javed noted that while playing Ram, he transforms into a different person. He recognized that Ram’s patience, decency, and kindness are qualities he must strive to embody, contrasting with his own fun-loving and impulsive nature. Despite his efforts, Javed admitted that he still struggles to fully understand Ram’s character.

Promoting Unity Through Art

Javed believes that his role as Ram helps bridge the gap between Hindu and Muslim communities. He pointed out that many Muslims have played Hindu characters in the past, and he is proud to be part of this tradition. Through his portrayal, he aims to convey important messages about respect for women, love for subjects, and environmental awareness.

To prepare for the role, Javed made significant changes in his life, including adopting a vegetarian diet and working on his patience. He learned that even in difficult times, like his 14 years of exile, Ram maintained dignity and kindness. Javed feels that art and theatre play a vital role in promoting interreligious understanding and unity, encouraging respect for artists who symbolise goodwill and brotherhood in society.
