The Vibrant Kites Flying Tradition of Jaipur

Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh of Jaipur, who ruled from 1835 to 1888, introduced kites flying as a royal tradition. This beautiful pastime grew rapidly in the society and it is still in existence to date. The festival of Makar Sankranti, which marks the sun’s transition from the southern to the northern hemisphere, is particularly important in Jaipur. On this day, people from different communities and religions come together to celebrate, making kite flying a cherished tradition.

A Symbol of Unity

In Jaipur, kite flying is more than just entertainment; it holds cultural and religious significance. The colorful kites soaring in the sky symbolize communal unity and harmony. The vibrant display of kites not only brightens the blue sky but also represents the Ganga-Jamuni culture, where Hindus and Muslims celebrate together. This shared tradition promotes the people of Jaipur as they create a feeling of being one among them.

The Art of Kite Making

Kite making in Jaipur is considered a true art. We choose rather old-school techniques and local resources such as paper materials, bamboo sticks, a thin thread, and wheat starch. Crafting a kite can take a whole day, with four to five people working together. The variety of kites available in Jaipur is astounding, with some even featuring celebrity faces.

Every year, Jaipur’s tourism department organizes a special kite flying festival at the lakeside of Jal Mahal Palace. This festival allows the whole city to get involved and supports local craftsmen as well as increases interest in the city. It is a colorful event that showcases the joy and excitement of kite flying.

The kite flying tradition in Jaipur is not just a fun activity; it embodies the spirit of communal unity and harmony. Celebrated with great enthusiasm during Makar Sankranti, this vibrant tradition reflects the diversity and cultural richness of the city, thanks to the dedicated artisans who keep this beautiful art alive.
