The Great Escape of Subhas Chandra Bose

Despite widespread men's support Subhas Chandra Bose's movement won its success mainly because of female collaborators Bivabati Devi Ramo Devi Larissa Quaroni and Mrs. Haji Abdul Sobhan.

In 1941, Subhas Chandra Bose escaped from house arrest in Kolkata, dressed as a Pathan. He made his journey to Berlin by moving through Delhi before Peshawar and Kabul. The world knows Bose escaped from custody yet ignores the vital role women played in his journey. Despite widespread men’s support Subhas Chandra Bose’s movement won its success mainly because of female collaborators Bivabati Devi Ramo Devi Larissa Quaroni and Mrs. Haji Abdul Sobhan.

Bivabati Devi’s Support

Bivabati Devi served as the wife to Subhas’s eldest brother Sarat Chand. As a younger brother Subhas followed his mother figure Bivabati Devi in high esteem. She stood by him both during and after difficult moments. When he escaped she arranged for his dinners to be delivered secretly to his room until she successfully hoodwinked the authorities on January 27, 1941. Through her smart thinking and wise understanding Mrs. Haji Abdul Sobhan helped Subhas Chandra Bose escape.

Help from Ramo Devi and Others

Ramo Devi served as a helper to Subhas while she lived with her husband Uttam Chand in Kabul. The government imprisoned Uttam because of his political activism. Ramo kept Subhas secure while creating a pleasant living space for him. She maintained the household daily operations while preventing neighbors from finding out about Subhas.

As Afghanistan’s Italian ambassador wife Larissa Quaroni participated extensively in Subhas’s escape. As Subhas Chandra Bose’s contact to the embassy she arranged for him to receive a bogus Italian passport. While living in Kabul the Indian revolutionary Haji Abdul Sobhan safeguarded Subhas Bose along with his German wife.

The brave women demonstrated advanced problem-solving abilities. Their contributions were vital to the success of Subhas Chandra Bose’s escape. The women involved made his escape achievable because without their help Bose would likely have failed.
