The Pasmanda Movement: Empowering Backward Muslims in India

The Pasmanda Movement, rooted in the Persian word meaning “those left behind,” encompasses Muslims belonging to the Shudra and Ati Shudra castes. With “backward” now associated with social and economic disadvantages, this movement emerged as a response to discrimination and marginalization within the Muslim community after the Mandal movement in the 1990s.

Its goal is to awaken the backward Muslim community of Indian origin, addressing their rights and duties within the democratic system and constitution. By promoting educational, social, economic, political, scientific, and cultural development, the movement aims to empower and uplift these marginalized sections of society.
