Charu Sinha: India’s First Female CRPF IG, who launched Suicide Prevention and Training

Soon after Republic Day, Bureaucrats India, an independent initiative celebrating good governance stories, highlighted 23 officers in the ‘Change-makers’ and ‘Innovators’ categories for their outstanding contributions at the grassroots level of the bureaucracy. Charu Sinha, India’s pioneering female CRPF IG, initiated suicide prevention and training programs, marking a transformative impact on force personnel.

India’s First Female IG of CRPF

Charu Sinha, a 54-year-old IPS officer from Telangana, made history as India’s first woman to be elevated as the Inspector General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Her exemplary performance earned her the top spot in the ‘Innovators-2023’ list.

Beyond Counterterrorism: A Holistic Approach to Policing

Charu not only excelled in counterterrorism but also initiated a psychosocial support program, ‘Love You Zindagi’ (LYZ), addressing the alarming rate of suicides among CRPF personnel. Her two-year tenure in Kashmir saw the training of 28,000 personnel, significantly reducing suicide rates from 58 to none.

Achievements: Awards and Recognitions

Her innovative approach garnered the FICCI Smart Policing Award in 2022, and she currently serves as the Inspector General of Police (IGP), CRPF, Southern Sector, at Hyderabad. Charu’s distinguished career includes serving in the UN peacekeeping force in Kosovo.

From Factional Feuds to Counterterrorism: Charu’s Diverse Experience

Charu’s journey includes handling factional feuds, communalism, and crimes as the Assistant Superintendent of Police. Her role as Officer on Special Duty involved leading anti-extremist operations in Medak district, eradicating extremism in Mahbubnagar, and managing various crises in districts like Chittoor, East Godavari, and Nizamabad.

Transforming Lives: LYZ’s Impact on CRPF Personnel

“Love You Zindagi”, ‘LYZ’ not only improved working conditions for CRPF personnel but also focused on their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. The program’s success stories include positive transformations in interpersonal dynamics, with officers sharing responsibilities and creating a happier work-life balance.

Advocacy and Awareness: Charu’s Campaign Against Gender Discrimination

Charu’s initiatives extended beyond policing, with campaigns against gender discrimination and creating awareness in conflict areas. ‘LYZ’ operated with a network of trainers, addressing issues ranging from cognitive distortion to financial management and fostering gender conversations.
