‘Loi’ – A Powerful Play That Won Hearts and Changed Perspectives

A recent staging of the Hindi play Loi in Mumbai left a deep impact on the audience. When it was performed at the renowned Veda Kunba Theatre, it felt as if 15th-century Banaras had come alive on the stage.

Written by renowned poet and lyricist Pratap Somvanshi, the play was directed by Akashaditya Lama, with Vikram TDR as co-director. The music, which added a soulful and emotional layer to the entire performance, was composed by Kuldeep Singh.

Loi – Not Just Kabir’s Wife, But a Strong Voice

In history, Loi is remembered only as the wife of Sant Kabir. However, this play presents a completely different image of her. Here, Loi is shown as a strong and fearless woman who stands against social evils, patriarchy, and discrimination carried out in the name of religion.

She is portrayed as a brave woman who boldly faces pundits, clerics, and even Sultan Sikandar Lodi. She speaks for women’s rights, equality, and humanity.

One of the most powerful moments in the play comes when Loi openly questions some of Kabir’s dohas-especially those that seem to portray women as inferior. This moment highlights not only her courage but also her sharp thinking and strong reasoning.

The play reaches its peak in the court of Sultan Sikandar Lodi, where Loi raises her voice against Hindu-Muslim divisions, hatred in society, and the oppression of women.

Powerful Performances and Dialogue

The strength of the play lies in its impactful dialogues, which touch the heart directly. Mitali Nag, playing Loi, delivered an outstanding performance. Her expressions, voice, and confidence brought the character to life.

Other actors like Vikram TDR, Mukul Nag, Aditi Mishra, Punesh Tripathi, Sohail Malia, Mehreen Saba, Apurva Mahesh, Reshma Mestry, Durgesh, Prateek Mahalle, and Arunoday Vajpai also performed brilliantly, bringing Sant Kabir and Loi alive for the audience.

A Message of Humanity

The play’s strongest aspect is that it is not just a historical story- it also reflects today’s society. Issues like communal harmony, women’s rights, and humanity are presented in a simple yet powerful way.

Akashaditya Lama’s direction keeps the play engaging till the end, while Pratap Somvanshi’s dialogues, with a slight touch of Urdu, add beauty and depth to the narrative.

A Memorable Experience

As the play ended, the theatre erupted with loud applause. Theatre lovers in Mumbai appreciated the performance wholeheartedly. Loi is not just a play, it is a story that reminds us that a woman’s voice is never weak; it only needs a society willing to listen.

The performance truly touched hearts and inspired hope that such stories will continue to spread the message of love, equality, and humanity.
