Mirza Mohammad Zaman Azurdah: From Veterinary Stock Assistant to Literary Luminary

It is hard to believe that the author of 50 books, winner of the Sahitya Akademi award, and one of the leading Urdu writers in the world, had started his journey as a veterinary stock assistant. Mirza Mohammad Zaman Azurdah of Hassanabad, Srinagar, is a testament to the power of perseverance and an unwavering passion for literature. Born in Amritsar during the tumultuous time of Partition, Azurdah’s family relocated to Srinagar, where his father, a trader of Kashmiri handicrafts, hoped for a better life.

Breaking Barriers and Pursuing Literary Dreams

Despite his humble beginning, Azurdah’s thirst for knowledge and literary excellence knew no bounds. After completing his matriculation in 1959, he joined Sri Pratap College in the science stream but soon realized his true calling lay elsewhere. Defying societal expectations, Azurdah left college to join the Animal Husbandry Department as a veterinary stock assistant. However, this was merely the beginning of his remarkable journey.

 A Celebrated Author and Academic

Azurdah’s tenacity and dedication paved the way for his illustrious career at the University of Kashmir, where he joined as a lecturer and eventually rose to become a Professor, heading the departments of Urdu, Kashmiri, Hindi, and Sanskrit. His contributions to the literary world are vast, encompassing fiction, non-fiction, essays, translations, and curriculum development.

At the age of 78, Azurdah is a celebrated author with a prolific body of work that spans 50 books. His writings have been incorporated into the curricula of several universities across India and overseas, and his textbooks for elementary to high school levels in Jammu and Kashmir have endured for decades.

Azurdah’s journey has been one of resilience, determination, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. His life serves as a testament to the transformative power of education and the unwavering spirit that can overcome even the most daunting of obstacles.
