Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, has appointed Prof. Mazhar Asif as its new Vice-Chancellor. He is an expert in Sufism and the mediaeval history of India. With over 20 years of experience in academics, research, and administration, Prof. Asif will be the 16th Vice-Chancellor of this Central University. His appointment comes after the position was vacant since Prof. Najma Akhtar retired in November 2023.
Academic Background and Experience
Prof. Mazhar Asif, 58, specialises in Persian language and literature. He earned his PhD in Persian from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and holds a postdoctoral degree from the University Grants Commission (UGC). He has been a member of the executive council at Maulana Abul Kalam Azad National Urdu University and JNU. Additionally, he has held important roles in the National Council for the Promotion of Urdu Language and the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). Prof. Asif has presented over 20 research papers at various national and international conferences and has published nine books in Persian, English, and Assamese.

As a professor at the Center for Persian and Central Asian Studies at JNU, Prof. Asif is known for his teaching skills and contributions to education. He was also a member of the drafting committee for the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. His appointment is seen as a significant step for the future of Jamia Millia Islamia. Students and faculty members are hopeful that under his leadership, the university will achieve new heights in academic excellence, innovation, and global collaboration.
