Singapore President’s Historic Visit to India

On Thursday, Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam received a grand ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan from President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This visit marks his first as President of Singapore and coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Singapore. This fact proves the necessity of this bilateral relationship.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

After the ceremony, President Shanmugaratnam spoke to reporters, recalling India’s early recognition of Singapore’s independence in 1965. He emphasized the deepening partnership between the two nations, stating, “It is a natural partnership between small country Singapore and large country India.” He noted that Singapore is the largest investor in India and highlighted the strong defence ties that continue to grow.

Shanmugaratnam shared that their relationship has entered a new phase with the upgrade to a comprehensive strategic partnership, announced during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Singapore. He talked about the hydrogen and automotive industries, advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, net zero industrial parks, and skilling for new generation industries. He also emphasized that both countries share a vision for digitalization and sustainability, aligning with India’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.

Making POCs, Social Interactions, and Potential Partnerships

President Shanmugaratnam flew to New Delhi on Tuesday evening and had formal meetings the next day. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar also had an audience with the President and discussed issues of cooperation, for example, in the sphere of high-tech products, including semiconductors, industrial zones, trade promotion. Jaishankar reflected positively on the visit, in his words, it would add new impetus to the comprehensive strategic partnership.

Accompanied by a high-level delegation, the Singapore President is set to hold bilateral meetings with President Murmu and Prime Minister Modi later in the day. After the competitions in New Delhi, he has slated his trip to Odisha for January 17 and 18.
