Maulana Mazharul Haq was an important Indian freedom fighter. He followed law in London, where he also came across Mahatma Gandhi. They both met again at the Bombay Congress held in 1915. Maulana Mazharul Haq: Education and Legal Career, National Service
After moving back to India Mazharul became a lawyer in Bihar. Pujari was very effective in his career as a lawyer. But he has had a desire to serve the nation. Some affluent Muslims sided with the British camp in 1906 but Maulana Mazharul Haq was against them. He was a firm believer of Non-Cooperation and would not enter the Legislative Council nor accept any post under the British Government and preferred going to jail as a consequence. A journalist named Manthreshwar Sharma, told that once Mazharul condemn the Bihar and Orissa governments over the torture of political prisoners. This led to a legal case against him, he did not defend himself however- this is a follow through for policy within Congress.
Campaign for Education and Taxation
Nonetheless, for a while even Maulana Mazharul Haq did not act like an activist but attempted to reform Britain from within. He was appointed as the member of the Council of Governor General Lord Hardinge in 1911. He discussed inequality in their taxes and called for free education for Indians. I want to underline that new taxes negatively affected the poor people of India. He said the government’s actions included non increase in taxes on tobacco products while at the same time increasing taxes on basic items such as petroleum.
