The Ajmer Sharif Dargah is the tomb of Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti, located in Ajmer. It means much more than an architectural masterpiece, this beautiful shrine is his permanent legacy. Gharib Nawaz or Khawaja Moinuddin Chishti was born in 1141 AD in a place, which falls in present day Iran. He belonged to a noble lineage, but by the age of 25 he became a monk. He wanted to preach peace and throughout care he toured the middle east and got to India in 1192 AD. The saint devoted his entire life for the people of Ajmer and for humanity, offering equal importance to all religions. Their scope of beliefs included kindness and tolerance, which made this man liked by many people.
The Ajmer Sharif Dargah: A Sacred Shrine
Dargah also therefore facilitates millions of people of different faiths converging to pray hence having a peaceful atmosphere. It’s a white-marble domed mausoleum surrounded by many more sometimes equally opulent constructions: Jannati Darwaza (Alleged Gate to Paradise) and Langar Khana (a kitchen which has provisions to prepare free food for the poor). All these people visit the temple to pay their honours and pray to receive the saint’s divine power.
Celebrating Unity: The Urs Festival
The Ajmer Sharif Dargah is known for the Urs festival which is celebrated on the probable death anniversary of Khoja Moinuddin Chisti. This mark is observed annually and during this time many believers and pilgrims come together to celebrate the saint. In Urs, there are qawwali, prayer and procession, which makes the atmosphere much more exciting and lively. It was established as a site where people of different castes and religions mix and work as followers, which makes me realise the strength of love in the world. It serves as a tedious mark of India’s taxation tour and its Sufi connection and the need for communal harmony in a pluralistic society.
