Ehsaas: A Driving Force Behind the Restoration of Kashmir’s Water Bodies

In a captivating television interview around two and a half years ago, Manzoor Ahmad Wangnoo, a prominent Kashmiri businessman, was posed with a challenge: explain in just 20 seconds what motivated him to dedicate his efforts towards saving and rejuvenating Kashmir’s water bodies. His response, “Ehsaas” (meaning “empathy” in English), encapsulated the essence of his tireless work and commitment to restoring the dwindling lakes of the Valley.

Witnessing the gradual deterioration and shrinking of the water bodies due to human greed and official negligence ignited a deep realization within Wangnoo. This realization, coupled with a genuine concern for the environment, became the driving force behind his monumental endeavors to raise awareness among the public and embark on the arduous task of restoring the lakes to their former glory.

Recalling his first encounter with Khushal Sar Lake, situated on the outskirts of Srinagar, in February 2021, Wangnoo vividly described its sorry state. The lake was heavily polluted, choked with solid waste, and emanating foul stench. During an interview with Awaz-the Voice at his office in Kashmir Mahal Resorts, overlooking the renowned Dal Lake, Wangnoo shared how the residents had responded with laughter when he expressed the need to clean up the lake.
