President Droupadi Murmu Extends Heartfelt Onam Greetings, Celebrating Kerala’s Cultural Abundance

President Droupadi Murmu conveyed warm wishes to the people of Kerala on the joyous occasion of Onam, a celebration that embodies gratitude towards nature’s abundant blessings. She greeted citizens and fellow brothers and sisters in Kerala through the official Rashtrapati Bhavan account on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). The President’s message highlighted the essence of the harvest festival in fostering prosperity and harmony among all.

Onam, a ten-day extravaganza known as Thiru-Onam or Thiruvonam, marks the return of the revered King Mahabali, also known as Maveli. It encapsulates the spirit of excitement and jubilation, woven intricately into Kerala’s rich heritage and cultural magnificence.

Commencing with the Atham celebrations on August 20, the ten-day Onam festivities honor King Mahabali and Vamana. To welcome Mahabali, people artfully construct vibrant floral carpets known as Pookkalam in front of their homes and institutions. The jubilations spread across educational institutions, offices, and various other locations.

During Onam, kasavu saris and mundu (dhoti) traditional attire graces the celebrants. It’s a time when families and friends unite, exchanging gifts such as new garments. Central to the celebrations is the unique culinary delights crafted at home and shared with others, with the pinnacle being the preparation of Onasadya—a special vegetarian feast.

This cherished festival aligns with the Chingam month, signifying the commencement of the Malayalam calendar and heralding the onset of harvest. Beyond its festive exuberance, Onam reverberates with the legacy of Mahabali, an exemplary ruler of mythological lore who once governed Kerala with remarkable leadership.

As the President’s message echoes the sentiments of unity and gratitude that Onam embodies, the festival continues to illuminate Kerala with its cultural brilliance, reaffirming the ties between nature, heritage, and the community.
