Know How India Inspired The US National Anthem

The national anthem of the United States, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” holds a special place in the hearts of its citizens. Composed by Francis Scott Key on September 14, 1814, during the British bombardment of Fort McHenry, its origins have intriguing connections to India. This iconic anthem symbolizes American patriotism and carries a historical link to India through rockets and a British warship.

As Francis Scott Key penned the verses of the national anthem, he drew inspiration from the rockets used by the British forces during their assault on Fort McHenry. These rockets, known as Congreve Rockets, were the brainchild of English inventor William Congreve, developed in 1804. However, their design and concept were borrowed from the rockets utilized by Tipu Sultan in India.

“The Star-Spangled Banner” epitomizes American pride and carries a unique historical connection to India. Tipu Sultan’s rockets and HMS Minden, constructed in Mumbai, subtly connect India’s influence with America’s national anthem.
