From Chai to Crores: The Kulhad Revolution

For those who’ve savoured the simple joy of sipping chai from a humble kulhad (earthen pot) at a local tapri (tea stall) in India, the experience is not just a drink—it’s an emotion.

But have you ever wondered where these beloved kulhads come from? Some trace their origin back to the Indus Valley Civilization. Over time, these earthenware pots have become a traditional, eco-friendly alternative to plastic cups, which pose harm to the environment and human health.

If you’ve enjoyed kulhad chai recently, it likely came from one of Shobhit Soni’s kulhad plants. Shobhit, a 29-year-old entrepreneur, realized the need for durable, sustainable kulhads during their delivery. Thus, he capitalized on this opportunity and established Mittisa—a company that crafts 100% sustainable and eco-friendly earthenware. His kulhad business achieved a remarkable annual turnover of Rs 2.76 crore.

Growing up in a village near Ajmer, Rajasthan, Shobhit found inspiration from businesspeople around him, nurturing his entrepreneurial spirit and determination to enter the business world.”I am a Marwari’s son; running a business is in my blood,” he jokes.

After completing his schooling, Shobhit pursued an engineering degree in Pune. Determined to apply his knowledge and create something of his own, he pursued an MBA in international business, continuing his academic journey.

“The way these glass cups are usually washed is by dipping them in soapy water and then once in clean water. I always preferred kulhad over glass, or even paper cups, for its hygienic and environmental benefits,” he explains.

While confined at home during the lockdown, Shobhit’s entrepreneurial spirit was undeterred. He spotted a gap in the market where kulhads often broke during transit, causing losses. This realization led to the birth of Mittisa.

Shobhit’s journey from a chai-loving entrepreneur to a kulhad tycoon is a testament to the power of simple ideas and unwavering determination.
