McCluskieganj: A Cultural Haven in Jharkhand’s Heart

McCluskieganj, 60 kilometers from Ranchi, Jharkhand’s capital, unveils a unique blend of religious harmony in its All-Religion Complex. The complex, housing a temple, dargah, church, and Gurudwara, is a testament to India’s diverse cultural fabric.

A Historic Gem Untouched by Time

Situated in the village of Dulmi, the complex’s British-era structures, untouched by renovation, offer a glimpse into the rich history of McCluskieganj. Local villager Shravan Yadav has played a crucial role in maintaining these sacred spaces, creating an atmosphere that resonates with solace for visitors.

Mini London: McCluskieganj’s Anglo-Indian Legacy

Once referred to as ‘Mini London,’ McCluskieganj was established in 1930 by Anglo-Indian businessman Ernest Timothy McCluskey. The town is spread over 10,000 acres and boasts over 300 charming bungalows, remnants of a bygone era when Anglo-Indians embraced Western culture and lifestyle.

From Ghost Town to Tourist Hub

Despite a population decline, McCluskieganj has transformed vacant bungalows into guest houses, attracting tourists from neighboring states. The city’s allure lies in its architectural splendor and the peaceful ambiance of the All-Religion Complex.

Noor Hasan Baba’s Legacy

The complex houses the tomb of Noor Hasan Baba, a figure revered for his spiritual influence during British rule. His tomb, adorned with a sheet every 22nd November, becomes a focal point for Urs celebrations, drawing devotees from far and wide.

Embracing Diversity: Multi-Religious Sanctuaries

The British, influenced by Noor Hasan Baba, constructed multi-religious places, including a Radha Krishna temple and a semi-built Gurudwara. The Sarva Dharmasthal, surrounded by the historic Sita Kund pond, adds a touch of mythology to the cultural tapestry.

McCluskieganj Today: A Harmonious Blend of Past and Present

Despite the challenges and changes, McCluskieganj remains a cultural haven where the past echoes through dilapidated bungalows and religious sanctuaries. The Radha-Krishna temple, alive with daily worship and vibrant Janmashtami celebrations, is a source of spiritual fulfillment for devotees.

In essence, McCluskieganj stands not just as a town but as a living testament to India’s unity in diversity, where history, spirituality, and cultural harmony converge.
