In a remarkable feat at the Asian Para Games in China, 16-year-old Sheetal Devi, hailing from Kishtwar district, has become a symbol of inspiration. Despite being born with a rare medical condition called phocomelia, which left her without upper limbs, Devi’s determination and grit propelled her to secure a gold medal in the compound open archery event. Her victory brings pride to her community and stands as a testament to breaking physical barriers and challenging stereotypes surrounding disabilities.

Sheetal, an 11th-grade student from the remote Lohidar area in Kishtwar, showcased unparalleled talent on the international stage. Collaborating with Rakesh Kumar, she etched her name in history by clinching the gold medal. Beyond her achievement, Sheetal Devi’s journey exemplifies the power of resilience and the ability to overcome challenges, making her the first and only international para-archery champion without upper limbs.

Where did you find inspiration to overcome challenges in your sports career?

Answer: My inspiration comes from my family, especially my parents, who never made me feel different. They instilled in me the confidence to pursue my dreams despite the challenges. The realization that I could achieve anything without my hands struck me during my childhood, and today, when I see the respect and recognition I’ve earned, I feel motivated to continue.

How has the support from your parents influenced your journey?

Answer: My parents have been my pillars of support since childhood. They never let me feel different and always encouraged me to face any obstacle with determination. The unwavering support of my mother and father has been crucial in shaping my journey. They are proud to see me achieve my dreams, and their support is unmatched.

You mentioned practicing archery since childhood. Can you share details about your training and achievements?

Answer: Embarking on my archery journey since childhood, I am undergoing rigorous training in a two-year program at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University. Guided by my coaches, Kudan, Abhilasha Chaudhary, and Kuldeep S. N., their invaluable mentorship has been instrumental in shaping my skills. Throughout the years, I’ve clinched ten international medals, proudly representing my country, and achieved the prestigious title of World Number One.

You’ve achieved significant success in international competitions in just two and a half years. How did you manage to attain world records and medals in such a short span?

Answer: The journey to becoming a world record holder and achieving international medals happened within approximately two and a half years. It’s a testament to consistent hard work and dedication. My family’s support and the guidance of my coaches have been instrumental in my success. With determination, anyone can overcome challenges and excel in their chosen field.

How do you navigate societal expectations and judgments, especially when people from your village may have preconceived notions about differently-abled individuals?

Answer: Growing up, I didn’t let societal expectations affect me. My family shielded me from negative perceptions, and I focused on my passion for sports. I haven’t visited my village in years, but my achievements speak for themselves. My success inspires others and breaks stereotypes about what differently-abled individuals can achieve.

What message do you aim to convey about your culture and achievements when participating in events like the Jammu and Kashmir Festival and Ladakh Festival?

Answer: Engaging in events such as the Jammu and Kashmir Festival and Ladakh Festival provides me with a platform to showcase the richness of our culture. My goal is to impart a message of inclusivity and ignite inspiration among the youth in India to pursue sports. The emphasis lies in underlining that everyone, irrespective of perceived limitations, can contribute to the nation’s sporting excellence through unwavering dedication and hard work.

With your achievements, what message would you like to send to parents regarding encouraging their children in sports?

Answer: My message to parents is simple – support your children’s dreams. My parents believed in me, and their encouragement has been the driving force behind my success. I encourage parents to nurture their children’s talents, provide them with opportunities, and instill the confidence to pursue their passions, regardless of any challenges.

Can you share your experience representing Kashmir and Jammu in promoting cultural exchange and understanding through sports events?

Representing Kashmir and Jammu in cultural events is a fulfilling experience. It’s an opportunity to break stereotypes and showcase the positive side of the region. The events aim to promote cultural exchange and understanding. Through sports, I aim to inspire people to look beyond preconceived notions and appreciate the diversity and talent in every part of India.

What advice do you give aspiring athletes facing similar challenges?

Answer: My advice to aspiring athletes facing challenges is to believe in yourself and your abilities. Surround yourself with a support system that uplifts and encourages you. Hard work and determination can overcome any obstacle. Your journey may be challenging, but every success is worth the effort. Stay focused on your goals, and you can achieve greatness.

How do you see your journey evolving in the coming years, and what legacy do you hope to leave for future generations?

Answer: I aim to continue breaking barriers and inspiring others in the coming years. My legacy is not just about medals and records but about encouraging a mindset shift – to embrace diversity, believe in possibilities, and create a world where everyone, regardless of their background, can pursue their dreams. I hope to leave a legacy that transcends sports and fosters a more inclusive and supportive society.
