Exploring the Contemporary Literary Landscape of Saudi Arabia 

The Center of Arab and African Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, in collaboration with Awaz-the Voice, organized a two-day international conference on “Modern Saudi Literature: Creation and Criticism” on May 7th. This event aimed to shed light on the vibrant literary scene of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, a topic that often receives limited attention in Indian literary circles. 

Objectives and Significance 

  • According to Prof. Rizwan-ur-Rahman, the Director of the conference, the primary objectives of this event were: 
  • Showcasing Saudi Writers 
  • – Present the works of Saudi writers and introduce their literary styles, perspectives, and contributions. 
  • – Explore the issues addressed in modern Saudi literature. 
  • – Analyze the themes and issues that Saudi writers focus on in their literary works. 
  • Fostering Academic Exchange 
  • – Provide a platform to discuss the latest developments in modern Saudi literature. 
  • – Facilitate the exchange of academic and scientific experiences between experts and those interested in Arabic language and literature. 

Promoting Literary Discourse 

Dr. Zar Nagar, the conference coordinator, emphasized the significance of this event, stating, “Modern Saudi literature has seen tremendous growth in recent decades, with many critically acclaimed works and notable literary awards. This two-day international seminar aims to open the lines of communication between Saudi literary principles and scholars from different countries.” 

Topics and Discussions 

During the two-day event, which comprised eight sessions, approximately fifty academic papers were presented, covering a range of topics: 

  • – Literature and National Identity in Modern Saudi Literature 
  • – National, social, and political issues 
  • – Impact of media and technology on the publication of Saudi literature 
  • – Women’s Issues in Saudi Literature 
  • – Children’s Journalism and Literature 

This international conference provided a valuable platform for academicians and researchers from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to engage with their counterparts from around the world, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the rich literary heritage and contemporary contributions of Saudi writers.
