Dr. Ijaz Ali: A Surgeon, Leader, and Crusader for the Underprivileged

Dr. Ijaz Ali was born in 1958  a lower-middle-class family in Bihar. His father, Sheikh Mumtaz Ali, was the first in the family to receive education and worked as a BDO during the British Raj. Despite financial constraints, Ijaz Ali’s father ensured all his children received a good education and moral values.

Overcoming Challenges

Ijaz Ali started his education at a madrasa-affiliated school for orphans in Munger. He later joined a government school and excelled in his studies, topping the matriculation examination at the state level. After completing higher secondary at Science College, Patna, he secured admission to the prestigious Patna Medical College for his MBBS.

During his medical studies, Ijaz Ali faced financial difficulties, often struggling to afford food and books. However, his passion for learning kept him focused and consistently ranked among the top students. After completing his MBBS, he pursued a master’s in surgery, receiving support from his in-laws and guidance from Dr. Kamal Ashraf, a renowned surgeon.

Serving the Underprivileged

In 1984, Dr. Ijaz Ali opened a clinic in Patna, following the advice of his mentor, Ghulam Sarwar. With a consultation fee of just Rs 10, he made healthcare accessible to rickshaw pullers, vegetable vendors, and villagers who could not afford expensive treatment. He treated patients with various ailments, including tuberculosis and kala azar, and reduced his surgery fees to a minimum.

Dr. Ijaz Ali wears many hats – he is a well-known surgeon in Bihar, a former member of Parliament, and a leader fighting for the rights of marginalized people. His journey from a humble background to becoming a respected figure in the medical and political spheres is a testament to his determination, hard work, and commitment to serving society.
