Dr. Fuad Halim, a 54-year-old Communist politician and doctor from Kolkata, has been offering dialysis treatment at an incredibly low cost of Rs 100 per session. This initiative started about 20 years ago, has saved hundreds of lives and given hope to those who couldn’t afford the expensive treatment for kidney problems.
A Mission of Compassion
Dr. Halim’s journey began with a desire to support needy families and protect patients from expensive medical treatments. Over the years, he has consistently reduced the cost of dialysis, starting from Rs 600 and now reaching Rs 100. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he even offered dialysis for just Rs 50, performing about 24,000 treatments.
His compassion extends beyond dialysis. Dr Halim’s organisation, Kolkata Swasthya Sankalp, has conducted thousands of cataract operations and blood donation campaigns. As president of the People’s Relief Committee, he oversees various low-cost healthcare initiatives.
Politics and Medicine: Two Sides of the Same Coin
Coming from a family of left-wing politicians, Dr. Halim is a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He has contested elections but maintains that his political and medical roles are driven by the same spirit of service. His wife, Saira Shah Halim, is also involved in politics as a CPI(M) candidate.
Dr Halim’s education at prestigious institutions in Kolkata and his fellowship under the Apollo Group have equipped him with the medical expertise to carry out his mission effectively.
A Community Effort
Dr Halim credits his success to like-minded friends and helpers who form the backbone of his work. He emphasises that without their support, this initiative would not have been possible.
The impact of Dr. Halim’s work is significant. By offering affordable dialysis and other medical services, he has made quality healthcare accessible to many who would otherwise struggle to afford it. His commitment to serving the poor, both as a doctor and a politician, sets an inspiring example of selfless service in the medical profession.
