Sairabanu: From Retirement to Running a School for Slum Children

Sairabanu, a retired school administrator, saw many children in the slums near her home dropping out of school. These kids often ended up doing small jobs or getting into trouble. This made Sairabanu want to help. With her husband’s support, she started a school in her home in 2010. The school, called New National High School, now has 200 students and teaches up to 12th standard.

Changing Lives, One Child at a Time

At first, the students were rowdy and used bad language. Sairabanu and her teachers worked hard to teach them good manners and proper speech. They also taught the children to be kind to animals and respect others. The school holds meetings with parents to help them understand the importance of good behaviour at home. Saira Banu is happy to see the children becoming more disciplined and helping new students learn good habits.

Overcoming Challenges

The school faces many problems. They don’t have enough money to build a proper school building, so they use Sairabanu’s old home. The fees are very low, and some students don’t pay at all. Sairabanu often uses her own money to pay teachers and buy things for the school. She even bought land for a new school building but needs help to construct it.

Despite these challenges, the school has many success stories. They helped a sick girl get an operation, and she’s now doing well in college. During COVID-19, when some boys left school to work, the teachers convinced their parents to send them back. These boys are now studying for degrees and will have better jobs in the future.

Sairabanu teaches her students to respect all religions and care for others. She believes these children can make India better in the future. Her dream is to open a hostel for the many orphaned children in her school, giving them a safe place to live and learn.
