Jammu and Kashmir in 2024: A Year of Change

In 2024, Jammu and Kashmir, now a Union Territory, experienced a year full of hope and the return of democracy. The year began from the standpoint of the most participated elections for the past ten years and highlighted the region. The National Conference party was able to regain power but the Political system became polarized. In the post-Sepoy mutiny period, there were hints of a regional polarisation of politics: the BJP grew strong in the Jammu region.

Security and Tourism

Even though there were some serious acts of terrorism in Jammu, the level of violence connected with terrorism in 2024 declined. In Kashmir, security forces managed to eliminate some anti peace elements who wanted to stir up trouble. This gave a kind of calm again to the Kashmir valley. People from other regions travelled to Kashmir for Sightseeing throughout the year contributing to its economic and social lives since many interact with people of different origin.

Challenges Ahead

The Omar Abdullah led government is facing a number of challenges as the year comes to close. The public demand employment, improvement in electricity and provision of social amenities for those impacted by the development projects. In Kashmir, people are also annoyed with shortage of power at night during winter season. Public here is angry against the Ropeway project that is going to be built at Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu region as they apprehend that their small businesses will be affected.

Another major issue is the reservation system in Jammu and Kashmir. The region has more reserved seats in colleges and jobs than open merit seats, some communities still complain of being left out. And even the heads from the ruling party are taking part in the protests over this matter. In this regard Omar Abdullah has constituted a committee and is still awaiting the court verdict regarding the reservation policy.
