Artistic Journey and Global Recognition

Born in 1953 in Srinagar, Masood Hussain pursued his passion for art at the Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai, where he honed his skills in graphic design and fine arts. Upon returning to Kashmir, he immersed himself in depicting the region’s rich cultural heritage, landscapes, and daily life. His works, characterized by realism and a keen eye for detail, offer viewers an intimate glimpse into the soul of Kashmir.

Hussain’s art has transcended regional boundaries, earning him international acclaim. His paintings have been showcased in numerous exhibitions worldwide, reflecting the universal appeal of his portrayal of Kashmiri life. The late poet Agha Shahid Ali, a close friend and admirer, featured Hussain’s painting “A Peep Out Of The Past” on the cover of his renowned poetry collection, “The Country Without A Post Office,” describing it as “such lonely work, done so bravely, and steeped in the community so beautifully and demandingly.”

“A Walk With Gandhi”: A Notable Collaboration

In a significant recent endeavor, Masood Hussain collaborated with Irish poet Gabriel Rosenstock to create “Walk with Gandhi: Bóthar na Saoirse.” This illustrated work, published in 2019 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth, combines Rosenstock’s haiku and prose with Hussain’s evocative watercolors. The book offers a kaleidoscopic view of Gandhi’s life, blending real and imagined events to provide readers with a profound insight into the Mahatma’s journey.

The collaboration was lauded for its innovative approach and artistic synergy. Historian Ramachandra Guha praised the work, stating, “I was moved and enchanted by Gabriel Rosenstock’s haiku on Gandhi. They run the range of human (and Mahatma-ic) emotions from sorrow to happiness, solemnity to mischief. They deserve, and will surely get, a wide readership across the world.”

Depicting Kashmiri Life and Heritage

Masood Hussain’s portfolio is a testament to his deep connection with Kashmiri culture. His paintings often portray the valley’s serene landscapes, traditional architecture, and the daily activities of its inhabitants. Works such as “Shehr i Khas, Kashmir” and “Rural Kitchen of Kashmir” capture the essence of life in the region, reflecting both its beauty and its challenges.

Through his art, Hussain not only preserves the cultural heritage of Kashmir but also invites viewers to engage with its history and traditions. His meticulous attention to detail and commitment to authenticity make his paintings a valuable record of Kashmiri life.

A Vision for Kashmiri Art

Beyond his personal creations, Masood Hussain has been a fervent advocate for the arts in Kashmir. He has organized international art conferences in the valley, providing a platform for local artists to interact with their global counterparts.
