Tamalhal: A Haven of Sufi Traditions in Kashmir’s Pulwama District

In the mesmerizing land of Kashmir, also known as Raesh waer (Abode of Rishis) in the local Kashmiri dialect, a village stands proud with its rich Sufi heritage. Tamalhal, nestled in the picturesque Pulwama district of south Kashmir, is home to approximately 3,000 individuals, including 200 Kashmiri Pandits who once resided here before the unfortunate wave of violence, sponsored by Pakistan, disrupted the tranquility of Kashmir.

Situated merely 7 kilometres away from the district headquarters of Pulwama, Tamalhal is affectionately referred to as the “Village of Sufis.” This humble community passionately upholds the teachings and practices of esteemed Sufi masters, diligently preserving their cultural and religious traditions.

For countless generations, Tamalhal has been blessed with the birth of Sufi mystics, enlightened elders, dervishes, Malangs, Qalandars, and Majzoobs.
