The Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) has today become more than just a place of learning; it is a vital center for education, research, and socially relevant thinking. In an exclusive interview with DNN24, IUST Vice-Chancellor Professor Shakil Ahmad Romshoo spoke candidly about the university’s journey, its progress, and future plans.
He explained how this university, established in 2005, is becoming a trusted and preferred institution for students and research scholars. According to Professor Romshoo, IUST’s objective is not merely to award degrees, but to empower students with skills, prepare them for employment, and strengthen them intellectually, socially, and globally. The conversation also delved into important issues such as research, placements, skill development, mental health, gender equality, and international opportunities, clearly reflecting IUST’s philosophy and vision.
The Educational Journey Began in 2005
Professor Shakil Ahmad Romshoo explained that IUST was established in 2005. At that time, the goal was not just to create a university, but to provide students in Jammu and Kashmir with an education that would enable them to keep pace with the rest of the country and the world. Resources were limited in the initial stages, but the intentions were strong. He said that, like every institution, IUST’s journey has not been without its challenges, but gradually the university has carved out its own identity. Today, IUST is not just an educational institution, but a platform where education, research, and socially relevant thinking are given equal importance.

Why is IUST becoming the first choice for students?
During the conversation, Professor Romshoo explained why IUST is becoming the preferred choice for students and research scholars. The main reasons for this are the high level of education, the research environment, and the opportunities available to students. New courses are constantly being introduced. IUST’s largest school is the School of Engineering & Technology. IUST’s primary focus is on science, technology, and entrepreneurship.
Education at the university is not limited to textbooks; students are encouraged to think, question, and work on new ideas. He said that today’s students don’t just want a degree; they want skills, exposure, and proper guidance. IUST focuses equally on all three. The courses here are designed to make students academically strong while also preparing them for the professional world.

Research that is relevant to society
A significant part of the discussion focused on IUST’s research focus. The research budget, which was initially around 2 crore rupees, has increased to approximately 65 crore rupees in the last three years. Professor Ramshoo clearly stated that research is only meaningful when it benefits society. IUST’s research focuses on social issues, the environment, climate change, technology, and the needs of contemporary times.
He explained that the university is conducting several research projects that aim to understand and solve problems related to the lives of ordinary people. Whether it’s environmental protection, water scarcity, or social change, IUST’s research is grounded in reality.
Special attention to environment and contemporary issues
Professor Ramshoo is an expert in the field of environment, therefore, research related to the environment is given special importance at IUST. He said that today the whole world is grappling with climate change and environmental crises. In such a situation, the responsibility of universities increases. At IUST, students are made aware of environmental issues and are motivated to conduct research that will benefit future generations. They believe that the purpose of education is not just to get a job, but also to produce responsible citizens for society.

The Gap Between Education and Employment
In the conversation, Professor Ramshu addressed a crucial issue: the gap between education and employment. The placement rate, which was 28 percent in 2021, has now increased to 75 percent. He acknowledged that many students today obtain degrees but lack the necessary skills for employment. IUST is continuously working to bridge this gap. The university conducts skill development programs, workshops, and industry-relevant training. Students are provided with practical knowledge so that they can understand the demands of the job market. Professor Ramshu stated that their goal is to empower students to become self-reliant upon graduating from the university.
Placement and Industry Connections
The placement system at IUST is also being strengthened. Professor Ramshu explained that the university is expanding its network with various companies and institutions to provide students with better placement opportunities. In addition, startups and entrepreneurship are being encouraged. He said that every student’s path is different. Some want to work, some want to start their own business, and others want to pursue research or teaching. IUST strives to prepare students for all these different paths.
Career Guidance and Proper Mentorship
This discussion also placed special emphasis on career guidance. Professor Ramshoo stated that while students today have many opportunities, proper guidance is essential. At IUST, students receive guidance through career counseling sessions, expert talks, and mentorship programs. Students are guided to understand which career path is best suited to their interests and abilities. This not only boosts their confidence but also enables them to make better decisions about their future.

Global Fellowships and International Opportunities
Professor Ramshoo explained that IUST does not limit its students to opportunities within the country. The university strives to provide them with opportunities at the global level. This is achieved through international fellowships, exchange programs, and collaborations with foreign universities. He said that when students go to the international level, their perspective broadens. They are exposed to new cultures, new technologies, and new ways of thinking, which further enhances their personality.
Preparing for International Competition
One of IUST’s major goals is to enable its students to make their mark at the international level. Professor Ramshoo said that for this, the university focuses on quality education, robust research, and skill-based learning. Students are motivated to participate in conferences, seminars, and international platforms. This instills confidence in them and allows them to prove their capabilities to the world.
Mental Health and Student Counseling System at IUST
Regarding the mental health system, he stated that the university has adopted a zero-tolerance policy. There is no compromise when it comes to the mental health of the students. For this purpose, the university has established a Center for Mental Health and Wellness, where every student has access to mental health facilities.
He explained that students can easily book their appointments through a digital app, ensuring they receive timely counseling and support. In addition, various committees have been formed in the hostels to monitor the well-being and mental health of the students. The professor said that the university is continuously working to strengthen and improve this system. The university’s act includes a student counseling service, with both men and women as members.

Gender Equality at IUST
The university places great emphasis on gender equality, ensuring equal opportunities for both men and women. The professor explained that whenever new vacancies arise at the university, efforts are made to provide opportunities for both men and women. Typically, an attempt is made to reserve about 30 percent of the positions for women. For example, if 10 teachers are being recruited, the university aims to have 4 or 5 of them be women. The impact of this is clearly visible. Today, approximately 44 percent of the total students studying at the university are girls.
Not only students, but also about 77 percent of the women hold responsible positions at the university. This shows that women are given ample opportunities to advance here. Girls are also performing well in sports and bringing laurels to the university. Regarding academic regulations, 75 percent attendance is mandatory for all students, but girls are given a 5 percent relaxation.
Future Vision and Mission
At the end of the conversation, Professor Shakeel Ahmed Ramshoo also discussed IUST’s future plans. He said that the university is constantly striving to improve itself. New courses, better infrastructure, and new dimensions of research are the focus of IUST. He stated that the true purpose of IUST is not just to award degrees, but to produce young people who are thoughtful, responsible members of society, and capable of bringing positive change to the country and the world.
This conversation clearly shows that IUST is not just a university, but a philosophy. A platform that connects education with society, employment, and the future. Under the leadership of Professor Shakeel Ahmad Ramshoo, IUST is continuously progressing and giving wings to the dreams of thousands of students.
