Global Summit Diplomacy: Power Dynamics and Strategic Moves

The recent international summit highlighted the absence of Russian President Putin, with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov standing in. The dramatic walkout of Western representatives during Lavrov’s speech shifted focus from Indonesian President Joko Widodo’s agenda.

The demonization of Putin and Western opposition was evident. Meanwhile, President Biden’s early arrival at the New Delhi summit sparks anticipation as he seeks to influence Indian Prime Minister Modi. Putin’s nonattendance, grounded in mutual trust, reflects New Delhi’s calculated finesse.

Despite Western pressure, the omission of Ukraine from the final communique is a significant point for Putin. European diplomats’ psychological tactics to include Ukraine proved futile.

Pressure persists to involve Ukrainian President Zelensky, as evident from the G7 summit. France’s President Macron orchestrated Zelensky’s discreet entry. Similar manoeuvres are expected in New Delhi, testing Modi’s resolve. Would Modi yield if Zelensky unexpectedly arrives?

While Modi and China’s Xi Jinping emphasize peace, complexities persist. Xi’s absence could signal progress, enabling Modi to decide the timing of the celebration, potentially after the 2024 elections.

India-US friendship solidifies amid China’s ascent, reshaping bilateral dynamics as Washington’s dominance wanes and India adopts a more assertive stance. Amidst intricate talks, Xi and Modi’s alliance preferences diverge.

Washington’s previous dominance allowed it to dictate terms, yet recent military setbacks challenge its image. This narrative of power shifts and diplomatic intricacies resonates on the global stage.
