ISRO and NASA Team Up for Space Mission

ISRO announces Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla as lead astronaut for the upcoming Indo-US mission to the International Space Station.

In June 2023, India and the US agreed to work together on a space mission. Now, ISRO’s Human Space Flight Centre has signed a deal with Axiom Space Inc, a company chosen by NASA, for the Axiom-4 mission to the International Space Station (ISS).

Two Indian Pilots Chosen for ISS Mission

ISRO has picked two Indian Air Force pilots for this mission:

1. Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla (main pilot)

2. Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair (backup pilot)

These pilots will start training in August. On the ISS, they will do science experiments and talk about space to people on Earth. This mission will help India’s space program and improve ties between ISRO and NASA.

India’s Big Space Plans: Gaganyaan and Beyond

India is working on its human spaceflight program called Gaganyaan. It aims to send three people to space for three days by 2024-25. In February, PM Modi named four pilots for this mission: Prashanth Nair, Ajit Krishnan, Angad Pratap, and Shubhanshu Shukla. They were trained in Russia.

For Gaganyaan, ISRO is developing new technologies like special rockets, life support systems, and emergency escape plans. They will test everything carefully before sending humans to space.

India has already achieved big things in space. In 2023, Chandrayaan-3 landed on the Moon’s South Pole, and Aditya-L1 was launched to study the Sun. These successes have boosted India’s space industry.

Looking ahead, India wants to:

– Build its space station called ‘Bharatiya Antariksha Station’ by 2035

– Send the first Indian to the Moon by 2040

PM Modi believes these space missions will inspire young Indians to become more interested in science.
