Kazakhstan: A Beacon of Hope in Uncertain Times

As 2025 begins amidst global uncertainty, Kazakhstan stands out as a promising and dynamic country. Its population, 69 percent of which are Muslims, has embraced secularism and in recent times this country has become one of the favorite tourist’s attractions for Indians. Despite its potential, Kazakhstan often lacks the recognition it deserves for the progress it has made since gaining independence in 1992.

Open Governance and

Kazakhstan’s achievements over the past year are impressive, especially given the challenging geopolitical climate, including the ongoing war in Ukraine. Despite facing significant challenges, such as violent protests in January 2022 and severe floods in 2024, Kazakhstan has made remarkable strides. Late in the last year the country has constructed 18 million sq meters of housing and 7000 Km highways have been constructed or repaired. Airline passengers were provided with new passenger terminals in major cities and the agricultural sector yielded grain production of about 27 million tones, the largest in a decade.

Social Progress and International Relations

Kazakhstan has also focused on social welfare, increasing pensions, allowances, and salaries for civil servants. The government provided the opportunity to save for education and housing by introducing Keleshek savings. It is intended to afford decent rent homes to 10,000 families per year by 2029, and health care facilities are being procured in the rural areas.

The country has also implemented sound legal changes concerning women rights and child protection, including severe consequences for the offenders harassing women. Measures against corruption have returned more than 2 trillion tenge (over 4.1 billion USD) since 2022, for schoolchildren and the construction of critical facilities.

Kazakhstan’s multi-vector foreign policy aims to maintain good relations with major powers like Russia, the US, and China, ensuring its interests are met. As a stable, multi-confessional state, Kazakhstan offers valuable partnership opportunities for India, especially during these transformative times in the global landscape.
