Nasreen Shaikh’s Retirement from Kho Kho

Nasreen Shaikh concluded her sports career after participating in the Kho Kho World Cup competition. The cup victory caused Nasreen to declare her retirement from the sport but her fans remained puzzled about her retirement choice. The 26-year-old Delhiite athlete Nasreen expressed she has accomplished trophies like the Arjuna Award and today added a gold for India. The present team members need younger players to develop further competition opportunities. During her 12 years of Kho Kho career she dedicated all her efforts to reach success.

Rise of the game

The worldwide rise of the Indian sport Kho Kho demonstrates itself through Nasreen’s achievement in competition. Away from sports administration duties she looks forward to seeing Kho Kho as an Olympic sport while believing foreign teams are already actively participating in this event. The Kho Kho Federation aims to create a movie that showcases Nasreen’s successful career path from Arjuna Award winner to Indian team captain.

Family Support and Achievements

The numerous hurdles Nasreen encountered consisted of limited funding. Eleven siblings relied on his hawking business for survival since Mohammad Gafoor supported them all as the sole breadwinner. Overall Nasreen found strong backing from her father when she wanted to pursue Kho Kho despite social opposition against female athletes. The year 2024 brought presidential Arjuna Award recipient Nasreen a time of great family happiness as President Droupadi Murmu handed over the prestigious award to her.

Her love for the game began during school when her teachers motivated her to play this sport. Nasreen took charge of the Indian team at the South Asian Games in 2019 as their captain which resulted in winning a gold medal. Through her participation in 50 national and 6 international events Nasreen has motivated all her sisters to join her playing the game.

The former Indian Kho Kho player Nasreen expressed her belief that the game originates from India. I will make efforts to achieve global recognition for Kho Kho. During the 2025 Kho Kho World Cup Indian female competitors achieved a resounding victory by beating Nepal 78-40 in the last match.
