Remembering Shahzad Mohammad Khan: A Life of Service and Inspiration

Shahzad Mohammad Khan was a remarkable civil servant who dedicated nearly four decades to public service. Working with the Indian Information Service, he served as press secretary to former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and was a spokesperson for the CBI during its most significant moments. At 67, he passed away on November 17 after a brief illness, leaving behind a legacy of professional excellence. Leaders from various political parties remembered him as a gentleman with exceptional qualities. He was particularly known for his work at the India Islamic Cultural Center, where he was a former president and always ready to help.

Media and Academic Contributions

As the head of DD News, Shahzad Mohammad Khan made significant transformations. He recruited talented journalists, launched innovative programs, and turned the government channel into a competitive media outlet. Under his leadership, the channel’s viewership increased dramatically. He was known for giving complete freedom to his staff, creating a positive work environment. Beyond media, he also made notable contributions to academic institutions like Jamia Hamdard, where he nurtured the Law Faculty. Colleagues and friends fondly recalled his cheerful personality and helpful nature.

Personal Character and Remembrance

Everyone affectionately called him “Shahzad Bhai”, reflecting his warm and approachable personality. At his memorial meeting in Delhi, leaders from across political spectrums paid heartfelt tributes. Senior lawyer Siddharth Lodhra described him as capable and friendly, while Congress leader Ashwini Kumar praised his polite manners. The meeting, conducted at the India Islamic Cultural Center, saw prominent figures like Salman Khurshid, Syed Shahnawaz Hussain, and Maulana Mohibullah Nadvi sharing memories. His sons – Shahwar, Shahbaz, and Shahryar – were honored during the event. A writer, Majid Deobandi, even announced plans to write a book about Shahzad Mohammad Khan’s life, ensuring his remarkable journey continues to inspire future generations.
