Srinagar to get New Chrysanthemum Garden

A new Chrysanthemum garden will open next autumn in Srinagar. The garden, christened Bagh-e-Gul-e-Dawood, will span over 100 kanals of land in Dal Lake. It would be constructed on vacant land within the Botanical Garden and would be completed by September 2025. The space will be filled with beautiful yellow, red, pink, and purple blooms come fall.

Extending the Tourism Season

Srinagar has made a new garden that tries to stretch the tourism season by another two months, mid-September to mid-November. Chinar trees is the only major attraction during these months. The dreams of the authorities about the creation of the Chrysanthemum Garden were sparked by the success of the Tulip Garden — attracting a huge number of tourists from March to May: Asif Ahmad, Government of J&K Floriculture Officer. The authorities are also working on a Japanese-type Cherry orchard to draw visitors with its pink blossoms when the Tulip bloom comes to a close.

Gardens of Kashmir Gardens have a unique significance

On November 22, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah laid the foundation stone of the Chrysanthemum Garden. He emphasized the significance of gardens in Kashmir’s heritage and tourism. Gardens have been an integral part of Kashmir traditionally, with the Mughals developing famous gardens such as Chasma Shahi and Nishat. The Chief Minister also pointed out that the Tulip Garden has changed the whole tourism season and it concludes in March and April this year. He hopes the same will happen for the months of October and November with the Chrysanthemum Garden, encouraging visitors to see more of Kashmir. This would benefit all local businesses, including shikarawalas, taxi operators, and houseboat owners.
The Chief Secretary, Atal Dulloo said, besides the existing autumn attractions, more should be created in other tourism destinations of J&K. He also urged the department to collaborate with local agricultural universities and the tourism department to establish these seasonal gardens, which would further promote tourism in the state.
