In 1947, amid the turmoil of the partition era, Azam’s great-grandfather, Rafiq Ahmed Nizami, faced a crucial decision – whether to remain in Delhi or relocate to Pakistan. Choosing to stay, he established an unbreakable connection with the dargah, a bond that continues through Azam and his family today.
Performing Qawwali is not merely a profession for Azam; it is a cherished family tradition and responsibility. His younger brother, Nazim Nizami, joins him in carrying forward the legacy. The family, including children, is naturally inclined towards music, making formal training unnecessary as they embrace the art from an early age.
Apart from serving at the dargah, organizers invite the Nizami brothers to perform at festivals and prestigious events, ensuring the preservation of Qawwali’s rich heritage. They feel blessed by Hazrat Nizamuddin’s kindness and believe that one rupee earned after a performance holds immeasurable value.
Another talented Qawwali singer, Usman Niazi, echoes the sentiment of preserving their musical tradition for future generations. Usman’s family has been reciting Qawwali at the dargah for generations, contributing to its preservation and inspiring many others to make it their profession.
