Rabbi Ezekiel Isaac Malekar: A Beacon of Interfaith Harmony and Peace

Rabbi Ezekiel Isaac Malekar, an India-born Jewish Priest, is the custodian of the sole synagogue in North India, located in New Delhi. His perspective on the Israel-Hamas conflict underscores his commitment to fostering unity and understanding.

In an interview with Awaz-the Voice on the Middle East, Rabbi Malekar emphasized the shared commonalities among different faiths, highlighting the common figures of Ibrahim, Ishaq, Jacob, Moosa, and Salman in Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. He firmly asserted that the conflict transcends religious boundaries.

Rabbi Ezekiel Isaac Malekar, a prominent figure in the capital, oversees the synagogue, which functions as a cultural center for the minority Jewish community and receives visits from ten Jewish families. He expressed the importance of recognizing the shared heritage between Jews and Muslims, emphasizing their brotherly bond and shared beliefs.

He denounced terrorism and urged for peace, insisting that groups like Hamas do not represent or interpret Islam or Muslims. His solution to the conflict is renouncing terrorism, followed by dialogue between the Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority, potentially with the involvement of the United Nations.

Rabbi Malekar strongly advocates for coexistence among various religions and actively participates in multi-faith conferences, fostering unity and understanding. He has even offered prayers at Ajmer Sharif, discussing Khwaja Moinuddin Chishty’s teachings.

He firmly believes in adapting to modern society while preserving traditions. Rabbi Malekar has officiated 15 interfaith marriages without requiring religious conversion, encouraging understanding and harmony.

Rabbi Malekar’s daughter, the only Jewish student at Jamia Millia, exemplifies the harmony he advocates. He was invited to Jamia Millia to lecture on religious tolerance and friendship between Muslims and Jews.

Rabbi Malekar is a religious figure and a lawyer who has worked with five former Chief Justices of India. His work continues to bridge divides and promote peace in a diverse and multicultural world.
