Imran Shah – Assam’s Distinguished Wordsmith

Imran Shah, often hailed as the Nawab of Assamese literature, stands as a venerable figure in the literary landscape of Assam. At the age of 90, his smile remains as radiant as his prolific writings. Bestowed with the Padma Shri in 2021, Imran Shah’s mastery encompasses poetry, lyrics, novels, plays, and scholarly pursuits, leaving an indelible mark on Assamese literature.

A Multifaceted Artisan

Known not only as the Nawab of Assamese writing but also by pen names such as Ishan Dutta, Anamika Baruah, Kumbhakarna, and Animesh Baruah, Imran Shah’s literary repertoire is diverse and rich. He has garnered recognition through prestigious awards like the Assam Valley Literary Award, Ajan Pir Award, Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbarua Award, and more, underscoring his significant contributions to the literary realm.

Prolific Contributions

Imran Shah’s literary journey spans 19 novels, numerous short stories, and poetry collections. His dedication to the craft is evident in the multitude of manuscripts awaiting publication. Born on November 23, 1933, in Dhai Ali, Sivasagar, he proudly asserts that Assamese literature reigns supreme in contemporary India.

A Bearer of Accolades and Concerns

Despite accolades, Imran Shah expresses dismay at the inadequate promotion and patronage of Assamese literature. A recipient of the Jnanpith award recognizes the need for increased support. The stalwart, deeply rooted in Assamese ethos, laments the attempts to sow division in society based on majority, minority, and indigenous labels.

Inception of a Wordsmith

Imran Shah reminisces about his early foray into poetry during school days at Sibsagar Govt HS & MP School. The spark ignited by composing poems for friends evolved into the publication of his first anthology, Banavashi, while still in Class IX.

Literary Odyssey

Transitioning to serious writing during college, Imran Shah’s short story in the influential magazine Ramdhenu marked the beginning of an uninterrupted writing spree. His creations, spanning short stories, novels, and poems, reflect his eclectic interests and garner love from readers.

Cherished Creations

When asked about his most prized work, Imran Shah, humble in his response, expresses love for all his creations. From short stories to novels and poems, each holds a special place, a testament to his continuous exploration of diverse subjects.
