The University of Calcutta, in collaboration with the American Consulate and Crummer Graduate School of Business, launched the GLIIF initiative to empower women entrepreneurs. Dr Sharmistha Banerjee, a key figure in this programme, highlighted the inclusive nature of the initiative, bringing together entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds. The event saw participation from Taajira, a women entrepreneurs’ community, introduced by Professor Shabina Nishat Omar.
Nurturing Women-Led Businesses
Dr Banerjee emphasised the programme’s focus on developing businesses run by women from various communities. She mentioned successful entrepreneurs like Sana Khan (jute craftwork), Alifia Rahman (cloud kitchen), and Arshia Ahmed (chocolates). The initiative aims to expand these businesses and foster networking among entrepreneurs of different faiths.
Environmental Responsibility and Social Entrepreneurship
Drawing from her 30 years of teaching experience, Dr Banerjee observed that women tend to be more empathetic towards social causes and environmental concerns. She cited global evidence showing that companies with more women on their boards are often more socially and environmentally responsible. This observation led her to explore social entrepreneurship, which combines profit-making with social and environmental responsibility.
Collaborative Learning and International Exposure
The programme offers unique opportunities for hands-on learning and international exposure. Twice a year, in collaboration with the American Consulate, students and entrepreneurs receive funding for training programmes in the USA. This includes an immersion programme with Bradford University, Illinois. The initiative aims to create a sustainable model of entrepreneurship that moves beyond grant dependence.
Dr Banerjee’s vision for the programme is to cultivate a new generation of entrepreneurs who balance profit with social and environmental impact. By bringing together diverse communities and focusing on women-led businesses, the GLIIF initiative is paving the way for a more inclusive and sustainable business landscape in India.
